The construction of Outer Ring into a dual carriageway will now start after many false starts. Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has said the construction project will take three years. The road starts from the Eastern bypass junction at Taj Mall up to Thika Road junction at GSU headquarters. The project is jointly funded by the Kenyan government and Africa Development Bank (AfDB) estimated to cost Sh8.5 billion. 11.5 per cent funding coming from the Government and 88.5 per cent being funded by the bank. KURA has now embarked on consultancy to do Road Asset Management System covering pavements, bridges, roadside furniture and slopes, and traffic control devices. The consultancy will develop and implement a Road Maintenance Management System and  mapping system.


The high court in Nairobi on 28th October 2014 suspended  the National Transport and Safety Authority from enforcing speed limits of 50kph for motorists on Thika Superhighway among other dual carriageways

Also suspended is the requirement for annual inspection of private cars which are more than four years old.

Justice George Odunga revoked the Gazete notice. Applying Licenses online was also stopped since not all Kenyans have access to the internet.

The Law Society of Kenya while instituting the applications subject to motorists outcry termed the rules by NTSA as a  violation of the constitution.



Kenyan car retailer CMC Holdings has lost 14 percent drop in pretax profit to 199.85 million shillings in the year to September 30.

The Car dealer has been sold for $86 million in a takeover by Dubai's Al Futtaim Group.

Reportedly sales costs went up by 6 percent to shillings 9.78 billion then , while an extra 85 million shillings went towards salary arrears increase for staff and redundancy payouts after the loss of its Jaguar Land Rover franchise.

CMC distributes Ford, Suzuki and Volkswagen vehicles among other brands in the region.

Thanks to a 35 million shilling fall in CMC's tax bill, earnings per share edged up to 0.19 shillings from 0.18 shillings.

The shares have been suspended from trading on the stock market while shareholders consider Al Futtaim's takeover offer.


Roadside courts stopped with immediate effect by Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga after widespread motorists outcry. The courts involved the Judicially, Police and Prison. Motorists were subjected to being handcuffed and thrown into prison vans if they did not ready hefty amounts of fines or cash bail. The process was blamed by Motorists Association of Kenya as too demeaning to motorists dignity and an infrigement to Bill of Rights enshrined in the constitution.

Members of the public got disatisfied with the crackdown which paralysed transport whenever it was mounted . They chased NTSA officials on several occations.

 In trying to address the backlog of pending cases in the Traffic Court and the high level of corruption existing within the Police Traffic Department, it would help to look back at how minor traffic offenders were dealt with in the past. Up to about the mid 1970s, it was never necessary for a Traffic Police Officer to drag a suspect to Court or to ask for a cash bail to be posted immediately a minor traffic offence seemed to have been committed. The simple process was to issue a free bond to appear in Court within a stated reasonable time. In the alternative, the accused was merely required to plead guilty and to state in writing any mitigating factors. The plea was left with the Officer to file in Court. The decision of the Court would thereafter be communicated by the Court through the post office. The accused would in turn send back payment through the same means. What happened to those good days ? There cannot be a better way of decongesting the court process and reducing the temptation to ask for or to offer a bribe.




The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)  new specifications for public service vehicle body fabricators.

All new buses must now meet required standards according to Kenya Bureuau of Standars Kebs.  This is in order to make quality aprroved motor vehicles for carrying passengers. Bus builders have been accused for careless assembling bodies which collapse even to slight impacts. Ntulele bus by one of many such cases.
